Adour Eco, the Port of Bayonne’s sustainable development approach
Saving resources
The Port of Bayonne is a winner of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Industrial and Territorial Ecology call for projects, and is actively developing projects to promote the ecological and energy transition in its area of activity.
Industrial ecology draws on existing synergies in natural environments to optimise flows in a given area. Its aim is to bring together the players in an area to create synergies between companies. Thanks to diagnostic tools and local mediation, waste from some companies becomes a resource for others.
The Port of Bayonne is working to identify these flows with companies in the port area and in partnership with various local authorities. Synergies of mutualisation and substitution have been identified in several sectors such as mobility, energy and materials recovery.
Decarbonisation
In line with the new national port strategy adopted by the Interministerial Committee for the Sea on 22 January 2021 (SNP), the Port of Bayonne sees the need to decarbonise its activities as a lever for growth in its economic performance.
To achieve this ambitious objective, the Port of Bayonne is piloting several actions:
- Carrying out a Greenhouse Gas Emissions Assessment (BEGES): this inventory is an essential prerequisite for setting up a strategic decarbonisation plan.
- Supporting players in the ecological and energy transition through a number of themes: work on employee mobility, recovery of waste heat, production of green energy, etc.
The port is supporting a number of decarbonisation projects based on innovative, virtuous and particularly promising solutions, particularly in relation to renewable energies, such as osmotic energy or the recovery of RDF to produce decarbonised energy…
Adour Estuary SPPPI

Collecting shoreline waste
Since 2001 the Bayonne & Basque Country Chamber of Commerce & Industry has entrusted the MIFEN association (Maison d’Initiation à la Faune et aux Espaces Naturels) with collecting, sorting, eliminating and recycling shoreline waste.
This operation combines an environmental mission with a social mission: the professional reintegration of local beneficiaries of the RSA (welfare allowance), whilst promoting vocational training and qualifications.
